K-Pop Star Moonbin Dies at Age 25 in Suspected Suicide

Moonbin, a rising star in the K-pop industry and a member of the popular boy band Astro, has died at the age of 25, according to an announcement by his record label on April 20, 2023. He was found unresponsive by his manager in his apartment in Seoul on Wednesday night, and police are reportedly investigating his death as a possible suicide.

Moonbin, whose real name is Moon Bin, was a singer, dancer, and actor who had won a legion of fans for his talent, charisma, and good looks. He had joined Astro in 2016 as one of its six members, and had become known for his powerful vocals, impressive dance moves, and all-around performance skills.

In 2020, Moonbin had formed a duo called Moonbin & Sanha with another Astro member, Yoon San-ha, and the two had been performing together on a world tour that took them to cities in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Their last performance was in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 8, 2023, just days before Moonbin's death.

News of Moonbin's passing sent shockwaves through the K-pop community, as fans and fellow artists mourned the loss of a talented and beloved performer. His record label, Fantiago, released a statement expressing its condolences and asking for privacy for Moonbin's family and friends.

"His unexpected departure has left us with a deep sense of sorrow and loss," the statement read. "We ask that you refrain from speculative and malicious reports so that his family can pay their respects in peace. We will do everything in our power to support his loved ones and his fans during this difficult time."

Moonbin's death has also highlighted the issue of youth suicide in South Korea, which has one of the highest rates among developed countries. While the overall suicide rate in South Korea has been declining in recent years, deaths among those in their 20s are on the rise. The K-pop industry has been particularly hard hit, with several high-profile suicides in the past few years, including those of singer and actress Goo Hara, K-pop star Sulli, and boy band members Minwoo of 100% and Jonghyun of SHINee.

Moonbin's sister, Moon Sua, is also a K-pop singer and a member of the girl group Billlie. The siblings had spoken in public about their close relationship and their mutual support for each other's careers.

As news of Moonbin's death spread, fans of Astro and K-pop in general took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the young star. Many posted photos and videos of Moonbin's performances and shared memories of how he had touched their lives with his music and personality. In South Korea, fans gathered at impromptu street memorials to lay flowers and post-it notes, and to light candles in his memory.
